Outdoor Theatre at Surprise Lake Camp.
 
Surprise Lake Camp is located at the end of
Lake Surprise Road (off of Fishkill Road)
in Cold Spring, New York. Please park by the
Main Building, and walk down the lakeside road
to the Outdoor Theatre.
 
Those who need to drive all the way may do so,
and park by the Outdoor Theatre.
 
Bathrooms are located in the Main Building.
  

Torah Portion for Week is

Noach, Genesis 6:9-11:32

Summary from http://www.urj.org/learning/torah/:
God decides to cause a flood that will destroy the world, sparing only Noah's family and the animals that Noah gathers together on the ark. (6:9-8:22) Life starts over again after the Flood. The Noahide Commandments are listed, and God uses a rainbow to make a symbol of the first covenant. (9:1-17)  People start to build a city and the Tower of Babel. God scatters the people and gives them different languages to speak. (11:1-9) The ten generations from Noah to Abram are listed. (11:10-29:2)

Chol HaMoeid Sukkot (Exodus 33:12-34:26)

Summary from http://www.urj.org/learning/torah/:

Moses asks to know God's ways and to see God's face. God instructs Moses to go to a cleft in the rock while God will pass by, allowing Moses to see God's back. (33:12-23)  Moses goes up the mountain with a blank set of tablets for another forty days so that God will again inscribe the Ten Commandments. Other laws, including the edict to observe the Pilgrimage Festivals, are also revealed. (34:1-28)

S'lichot
WITH RABBI MICHAEL ROTHBAUM 
at ST. MARY'S PARISH HOUSE
 
{S’lichot (Hebrew for forgiveness) is observed on the Shabbat before Rosh Hashanah.}

The evening begins at 7:00 p.m. with a Havdalah service and children’s hour, bringing a close to Shabbat with the lighting of the braided candle. Rabbi Mike will spend the hour with kids of all ages to share some of the special holiday rituals, including the blowing of the shofar and the blessing of dipping apples in honey.

 

All are invited to stay for a buffet dinner hosted by the PRS Board of Trustees in honor of Rabbi Mike, who will be serving as the synagogue’s first contracted Rabbi this upcoming year.

 

As we finish dinner,  Rabbi Mike will lead an adult teaching and discussion to help us prepare for the High Holy Days process of introspection, forgiveness, and transformation.

 

The evening will end with a traditional S’lichot service that will begin at 9:30 p.m.

This Week's Torah Portion is

Shoftim, Deuteronomy 16:18–21:9

Summary from http://www.urj.org/learning/torah/:

§ Laws regarding both sacred and secular legislation are addressed. The Israelites are told that in every dealing they should pursue justice in order to merit the land that God is giving them. (16:18–18:8)

 

§ The people are warned to avoid sorcery and witchcraft, the abhorrent practices of their idolatrous neighbors. (18:9–22)

 

§ God tells them that should an Israelite unintentionally kill another, he may take sanctuary in any of three designated cities of refuge. (19:1–13)

 

§ Laws to be followed during times of peace and times of war are set forth. (19:14–21:9)

ANNUAL MEETING REPORT
At the Annual Meeting, held Sunday, June 6, 2010 at the Butterfield Library,
two new trustees were elected and one trustee re-elected.
Congratulations and Thank You to
Eliott Dranoff, Jane Silver Timm and Diane Botnick
 
After a brief discussion, the engagement of
Rabbi Michael Rothbaum to serve as the
Philipstown Reform Synagogue Rabbi (part time)
was approved. This is a big step for PRS and
we are grateful and honored to take it with Rabbi Mike.
 
As Rabbi Mike is travelling in Israel for the month,
the services and events calendar for 2010 - 2011 will be finalized
upon his return, and then distributed to all of you!
You can expect more information in early August.
 
If you have not had a chance to meet Rabbi Mike yet,
please take a look at the attached bio, and be sure to
come to a Philipstown Reform Synagogue service or event!
