History (ongoing) of the Highlands Chain

History (ongoing) of the Highlands Chain

Postby Aaron Freimark » Mon Jun 14, 2010 8:33 am

I'll update this post whenever there are changes to the site.

  • 1778 - the Highlands Chain "is created by Americans to stop the English communicating. (via the Hudson river)"
  • 1993 - Englishman Richard Bates founds the Highlands Chain "to help Americans in Philipstown communicate (online)"
  • November, 2009 - Ray Fusco creates the Philipstown Current, an inspiration for the current Chain. Unfortunately, the site host decides to begin charging fees beginning July 2010, so a new solution must be found.
  • May 23, 2010 - After back-to-back allnighters, we launch the Highlands Chain.
  • May 31 - Rotating pictures on the top of each page. Submit your own!
  • June 2 - Embed MP3s into your posts.
  • June 4 - Attach a mugshot to your profile.
  • June 8 - Daily or weekly E-mail Digests.
  • June 11 - Announcements can now arrive via RSS feeds and HTML E-mail. We show prettier Addresses for our posts, with more text and less computer code.
  • June 14 - A little redesign of the home page. More icons and less text. The events calendar includes the weather forecast, via Weather Underground. We show a box for "Now Playing on Cold Spring Radio." Recent Announcements have been divorced from Recent Discussion.
  • June 15 - Added Haldane and GUFS calendars on the events page, and some calendars now have helpful labels. Also added school announcements as well as Chapel of Our Lady Restoration and First Presbyterian Church of Philipstown and Cold Spring Fire Company No. 1.
  • June 18 - There's now a "Recent Videos" section on the home page, and temperatures (air and river) too.
  • June 22 - Added a front page widget for upcoming Metro North trains.
  • June 29 - 100 members!
  • August 31 - A streamlined home page
  • October 13 - Julia Butterfield Library added to our Events listing

Streamlined Home Page

Postby Aaron Freimark » Tue Aug 31, 2010 11:34 am

Hi folks. I've streamlined the home page. Announcements and Discussion are now combined into a single list. Announcements are colored beige-ish to highlight them. And there's a "New Topic" button on the front page that will quickly post to the "General Discussions" forum.

I hope this makes the site easier for more people.

Butterfield Library Events on the Calendar

Postby Aaron Freimark » Thu Oct 14, 2010 8:40 am

I've added the event calendar from the Julia Butterfield Library to our own event calendar on the home page. These events have a "JBL" prefix. (Desmond Fish Library events are prefixed with "DFL".)
