On May 22, Give Hudson Valley Farmers a Leg Up
Campaign

On May 22nd, Glynwood is pleased to co-host a special "listening session" with Hudson Valley Pattern for Progress in support of the Hudson Valley Food Hubs Initiative. The project aims to help area farmers reach larger customers, such as public institutions, supermarkets, or restaurants by documenting the region's agricultural productivity and demand for local food, and by identifying strengths and infrastructure needs of the region's food supply chain. Input from farmers, food businesses, and others like you is an essential first step of this project.

We invite you to be a part of this critical conversation to support the Hudson Valley's regional food system. Please join us at Glynwood and let us know about your current efforts to distribute locally-produced food, including the challenges in food distribution, infrastructure resources and needs in the region, and ideas for collaborative opportunities.

Several such "listening sessions" are taking place throughout the Hudson Valley in the next few weeks. If you live in Columbia, Dutchess, Greene, Orange, or Ulster counties, there are sessions in your neighborhood. Download a flyer [pdf] with details Here.

The session at Glynwood will take place on Tuesday,

May 22, from 4pm to 6pm in the Main House.

To register and for additional information, email HVFoodHubs@pfprogress.org or

call 845. 565-4900.

Glynwood works to save farming in the Northeast.

Pattern for Progress promotes regional, balanced and sustainable solutions that enhance the growth and vitality of the Hudson Valley.

TEDxManhattan Challenge now open

Postby Robotic Autoposter » Wed May 16, 2012 8:02 am

TEDxManhattan logo
Greetings!

TEDxManhattan Challenge 2013

TEDxManhattan is pleased to launch the TEDxManhattan Challenge - we challenge you to work with a group of people in your community on a project related to sustainable food and farming. Start a garden at a senior center; start a farmers market; develop a cooking class at your child's school; create a Food Policy Council in your city. Be creative!

Let us know what you're doing to change the way you eat in your community - the project deemed the most impactful will win the opportunity to speak live on the 2013 TEDxManhattan stage.   Our 2012 winner was Howard Hinterthuer of the Veteran's Food Production Program - watch a video of his talk

Rules:

  • You can develop a new project or work on an already existing one. The judges will be looking for impact, not size, so develop a project that will have a positive impact in some part of your community.
  • You must work with other people in your community. (You can define community as you see fit.)
  • You must register your project at http://tedxmanhattan.wufoo.com/forms/tedxmanhattan-challenge/.
  • You must create a name for your project.
  • Applications must be received by October 1, 2012.
  • Your project does not have to be completed by the end of the year, but you must have had some type of impactful result from your work by that time.
  • A number of finalists will be chosen mid-October 2012. Finalists will be required to send a follow-up report by November 5, 2012. Winner will be announced early December.
  • The project deemed the most impactful will be given at least three minutes at the TEDxManhattan 2013 event. Only one person can speak from stage.
  • Everyone who applies agrees to have their information on the TEDxManhattan website and gives TEDxManhattan permission to publicize/promote the projects underway.

Please note: The prize is the chance to speak on stage and one free ticket for the day. The winner will be responsible for transportation to and from the event.

And for any of you who would like to be a speaker at next year's event, the TEDxManhattan Open Speaker Call will officially begin next week, but you can apply now at  http://tedxmanhattan.wufoo.com/forms/speaker-application/.

Sincerely,

Diane

Food Revolution Dinner and Some Ed

Postby Robotic Autoposter » Tue May 01, 2012 4:47 pm

TEDxManhattan logo
Greetings!
Food Revolution Day is the Jamie Oliver Foundation and Jamie Oliver Food Foundation's first-ever global day of action. It is a chance for people who love food to come together to share information, talents and resources; to pass on their knowledge and highlight the world's food issues. It's about connecting the community through events at schools, restaurants, local businesses, dinner parties and farmers' markets. The Foundations want to inspire change in people's food habits and to promote the mission for better food and education for everyone.

Dinner and Some Ed is an effort to raise awareness (and to enjoy!) local sustainable food by hosting a meal and showing a TED or TEDx video on food and farming. "Dinner" is a relative term- this can also be done as a brunch, lunch, picnic, or potluck. The key is just to have a computer or a mobile device where you can watch the talks while enjoying delicious, sustainable food.

Dinner and Some Ed came out of a project called Tedibles at TEDActive in Palm Springs, CA, in 2012. It is an effort to bring sustainable food to the extended TED community (meaning anyone who's ever watched a TED talk).

Food Revolution Day on May 19th is the perfect time to host your first dinner and to join the global movement.

How can you get involved?  Simple:

Step 1: Host a Dinner Party on Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution Day site

Step 2: Name your dinner "Food Revolution Dinner and Some Ed"

Step 3: Plan a meal

Step 4: Invite friends

Step 5: Watch TED/TEDx videos

Have fun!

Use your imagination when planning your meal - host a potluck, invite your local farmer, or have guests bring recipes along with their dish and include where they sourced their ingredients.  Visit Dinner and Some Ed's What To Do page for ideas and more information.

Our Pick of the Month videos are:

Jamie Oliver: TED prize wish: Teach every child about food

Laurie David: Dinner Makes a Difference

Dan Barber: How I Fell in Love with a Fish

Birke Baehr: What's Wrong with Our Food System

Watch these or your own combination of videos while enjoying some great tasting food, and be sure to check out our site for more information or to submit a review of your dinner!

Brought to you by The Glynwood Institute for Sustainable Food and Farming in support of Food Revolution Day.

Thanks!  And we'll be back soon with TEDxManhattan information.  Just mark your calendars - February 16, 2013.

All the best,

Diane

TEDxManhattan Update

Postby Robotic Autoposter » Mon Mar 26, 2012 4:00 pm

Greetings!

TEDxManhattan DVD

The DVDs for TEDxManhattan are almost ready. We will be offering them free of charge to anyone who would like to use them for educational and/or noncommercial uses. Please email TEDxManhattan@gmail.com with your mailing address if you would like a copy.

Dinner and Some Ed

We are currently putting together a Tumblr site called Dinner and Some EdVisit it to find out how you can have your own TEDx-like experience; it is chock full of ideas on how to host a sustainable dinner party and show TED and TEDx food talks.   We're still developing the site but wanted to give you a sneak peek. Please visit it today - and when you have your sustainable food event, feel free to post up photos and a write up of what you did.

TEDxEast

As a courtesy to the TEDxManhattan mailing list, our friends at TEDxEast are offering direct admittance to the TEDxEast program "The View from in Here" at Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center on May 11, 2012. You can bypass the registration and sign up directly by going to

http://www.eventbrite.com/event/3006202633

The cost is $200 plus a small handling fee.

To find out more about TEDxEast, please visit http://www.tedxeast.com/events.shtml.

Please note, this is not a sustainable food TEDx; this is a regular TEDx program. The website describes the program:

Finding ourselves in a time of considerable social upheaval, we recognize this as an opportunity with our community to step back and look at things more critically. This means to examine, discuss and interrogate the ideas around us. With a tightly curated program of 25+ ideas, personalities and performances, we are designing a day that will take the TEDxEast experience to a whole new level. 'The View from In Here' is designed to engage our community in a different way. Our event will offer an examination of multiple perspectives - the shades of grey that inhabit all aspects of life. It will be for our attendees to decide if the ideas presented are the beginning of the end or the next big thing; magnanimous or mercurial; useful or useless.

TEDxManhattan 2013

Mark your calendar. TEDxManhattan "Changing the Way We Eat" 2013 will be held in February of 2013. For anyone who would like to host a viewing party, pencil in February 16th. We will let you know when the date is finalized. More details to come in the next few months.

Thanks for being part of the TEDxManhattan family - we're working on some exciting things for next year!

Warmly,

Diane
