Dear Friend of the Art Center,

Please join us for a fascinating and eye-opening panel discussion with artists featured in Garrison Art Center's first group video show, Therefore I Am, on Sunday, February 26, from 3:00 to 4:00.

Exhibition curator, multimedia artist Greg Slick, will moderate the discussion, Deep focus on the artists and their work.   You'll meet and listen to artists Brian Doyle, Richard Kroehling, Mollie McKinley, Therese McPherson, Brian Stinemetz, and Athena Torri share their thoughts on their video and film practice and how it relates to the show's theme of highly subjective work. A short question and answer session will follow.

Our two exhibitions, paintings and sculpture by David Hayes and videos curated by Greg Slick closes Sunday, February 26, 5:00pm.

Sincerely,

Carinda Swann

Silkscreen by Member Artist  Karl J. Volk

Dear Art Center Members (and non-Members),

We are looking forward to an exciting 2012 Member Show, and we hope you will participate. The Show will open March 23 and run through April 1 with a reception for our artists on Friday evening March 23 from 6 to 8pm.

The process is simple--just follow the simple instructions below:

The Member Exhibition is open to all current members of the Art Center. A membership form is included on the attached Entry Form if you would like to renew or join. If you are unsure of your membership status please contact the office.
  • Please fill out this Member Show Entry Form and bring it in with you when you drop off your work
  • Deliver work between 10am and 5pm on:
    Saturday, March 17  -- Sunday, March 18 -- Tuesday, March 20 -- Wednesday, March 21

  • All media accepted
  • Work must be ready to hang and no larger the 36" x 36"
  • Don't forget we are closed on Mondays.
Please arrange to pick up your work by 5pm, Tuesday, April 3, 2012. This pick up deadline is important due to our lack of storage area--a crowded storage makes it difficult to keep your work safe from damage.
If weekday pick up is a problem, you may pick up your piece the day the show closes, April 1 from 4:30 to 5:00 sharp.

All work must be signed out with office staff at the time of pick up. Thank you for your participation and cooperation.

Sincerely,
Dolores Strebel

still from Blue by Richard Kroehling
Dear Friend of the Art Center,

We are very excited about our two shows in the galleries and hope you will join us Friday evening (Feb 10) from 6 to 8 to see the work and meet the artists.

The Gillette Gallery features sculpture and paintings on paper by David Hayes, a prolific sculptor of the past 50 years. (for more on Hayes see attached article)
In the Balter Gallery we are presenting our first exhibition of Video Art, curated by Greg Slick and featuring 8 artists.
To learn more about Greg and his inspiration for this show take a look at the excellent article by Alison Rooney here Philipstown.info.

We will also present a panel discussion on video art on the last day of the exhibition, Feb. 26 from 3 to 4.
The panel will be led by Greg Slick with 6 of the participating artists as panelists:
Brian Doyle, Brian Stinemetz, Mollie McKinley, Therese McPherson, Athena Torri and Richard Kroehling.
We hope you will join us. The discussion is certain to shed light on the current state of video art.

This exhibition runs through February 26, and our galleries are open Tuesday through Sunday, 10am to 5pm.

Sincerely,

Carinda Swann

Summer arts down by the riverside SERIOUS ART, SERIOUS FUN

Postby Robotic Autoposter » Mon Feb 06, 2012 10:25 am

Dear Friend of the Art Center,

We are happy to announce that registration is open for the Art Center's two summer arts programs.  Our programs are touted as one of the best values in the Hudson Valley for both content and cost.  Each year parents and kids alike rave about the experience.

"From the point of view of a working design professional, the world of education can often be about memorization. This work in contrast, avails young minds' potential, awareness and ability to problem solve rarely seen in school. And best of all, it puts hard work into the context of enjoying oneself!”   Lisa and Paul, parents of Summer Arts on the Hudson students.

Summer Arts on the Hudson for students entering Kindergarten through 8th grade will start June 25 and runs for three weeks. This year's theme Taking Line for a Walk  was inspired by the drawing exhibition “on LINE” at MoMA this past year which showed a wide spectrum of drawing approaches, from ephemeral sand drawings to lines stitched onto fabric.  Dia:Beacon currently has on exhibit wall drawings by Sol LeWitt and 3-D string drawings by Fred Sandback. Past artists, such as Rembrandt, Paul Klee, Matisse, Calder and Agnes Martin, to name just a few, have also made radical contributions in the realm of drawing. Students will look at work by these artists and explore their own unique ways of using line to create both 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional work.

Our 13 year-old arts intensive immersion program Summer Art Institute was founded as a means to enhance the arts education provided by area high schools. As funds for arts education continue to be cut, it is vital that organizations like ours continue to offer the kind of arts education that develops skilled young artists and informed young adults. Our program draws high praise from parents and students alike. Students attend noted art schools, and those who choose different fields will be the first to say how their experience in this creative environment positively influences all they choose to undertake. The program begins July 16, culminating with a two-day student exhibition on August 4 & 5.  The Summer Art Institute is generously supported in part by the Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union.

Attached are registration forms for both programs. To see the full description of our summer arts education, please visit our website at garrisonartcenter.org and click on Summer Programs at the left.

Sincerely,

Barbara Smith Gioia
Education Coordinator

Video show with 8 artists -plus distinguished American artist David Hayes

Postby Robotic Autoposter » Wed Feb 01, 2012 3:04 pm

Dear Friend of the Art Center,

We are very excited about our next two exhibitions:
In the Balter Gallery--Therefore I Am is a video show that includes 8 artists, curated by multimedia artist Greg Slick.
In the Gillette Gallery we will feature sculpture and painting by the distinguished American artist David Hayes. (Scroll down to see the man himself)

We hope you will join us on Friday, February 10, from 6 to 8 for a reception to meet the artists. We first met David Hayes a few years ago when his work was included in CURRENT, Garrison Art Center’s summer sculpture exhibition at Boscobel.  Hayes has been working in steel for more that 50 years and is best known for his timeless and majestic metal sculptures, but his two dimensional work is equally commanding.  His exhibition at the Art Center includes a number of small sculptures with partnering paintings on paper completed during the past decade or so. Also included are two new large scale pieces on our Sidewalk Sculpture Gallery created specifically for this show plus a large polychrome piece. Many of you will recall seeing the beautiful Hayes piece that is at the water's edge here on the Landing.

Hayes, who was born in Connecticut and still lives and works there, received his education at the University of Notre Dame and from Indiana University where he studied with David Smith. He is the recipient of numerous awards including a Fulbright Scholarship and a Solomon Guggenheim Fellowship.  The still prolific Hayes has established a national, as well as international, reputation for his contribution to the history of American sculpture and has had more than 300 exhibitions worldwide. His work is included in more that 100 institutional collections, including those of the Guggenheim Museum and the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.  We are honored to offer an exhibition of this caliber right here in our own backyard.

Greg Slick is a multimedia artist and independent curator based in Beacon, NY. He is the founder and co-director of The Artist’s Statement Picture Show, a project that screens work by emerging and established artists operating in the mediums of film, video art, and new media. Slick has also curated exhibitions at various venues, including the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art in New Paltz, NY, and was the co-owner and co-director of the gallery GO NORTH: A Space for Contemporary Art, in Beacon, NY.

The seven featured films and videos explore a variety of subject matter—identity, obsessions, personal demons, family, friends -- and spans a range of genres, including experimental narrative, non-narrative, performance video, and home movies.  Participating artists include: Brian Doyle, Richard Kroehling, Marko Mäetamm, Mollie McKinley, Therese McPherson and Athena Torri, Brian Stinemetz and August Ventimiglia.

Both shows will run from February 4 through February 26.  The public is invited to a reception for the artists on Friday, February 10, from 6 to 8pm. If you're not able to join us for the reception, we hope you will make time to stop by.  Gallery hours are Tuesday through Sunday, 10am to 5pm.  For more information about these exhibitions and other Art Center programs call 845.424.3960 or visit www.garrisonartcenter.org.

Sincerely,
Carinda Swann

Carinda Swann offers Classical Drawing-a must do for any artist

Postby Robotic Autoposter » Fri Jan 27, 2012 2:17 pm

Before Picasso did this pitcher and apple...

...he did this one.

Dear Friend of the Art Center,

Painters, photographers, sculptors and those reluctant to take a painting class have been asking for this class, so here it is.

Classical Drawing  is designed for artists who never got the traditional classical training and for those who just want to learn to draw from observation. Abstract artists from the early 20th century on understood that learning to draw from observation using traditional techniques was an essential part of their education and ultimate success.

Garrison Art Center Executive Director Carinda Swann will teach the class.  Carinda has a Masters of Fine Art and taught classical drawing at Marist College for 15 years. She was a co-founder of the Art Center's high school arts immersion program, the Summer Art Institute, and served as director and drawing instructor for its first 10 years.

Classical Drawing  will begin Thursday, February 9, 2012, from 5pm sharp to 7ish. The class will start from square one and move very quickly. Cost for the class is $120 for a 4-session block plus a simple material list--materials will be provided the first class. Be sure to reserve your spot right away as the class is limited to 8 students. Students must take the first 4-week block, and can choose to continue.
